Shoefiti Mapping Update

I’m currently experiencing some technical difficulties with our shoefiti map, so I’ve temporarily removed it from the homepage. Click here to view the map. It’s working better with Firefox browsers than Internet Explorer, so if you don’t have Firefox yet, here’s one more reason to get it.

Twin Cities visitors: The motivation behind shoefiti.com wasn’t as much the motivation behind why the shoes are on the lines as it was Xcel Energy’s inconsistent response to removal requests. As you can see from the map, the shoes in the Longfellow Community, (to the East of Hiawatha Avenue) are removed in a timely manner, while shoes in Phillips and Central are left hanging.

Do the shoes mean something? The more data I’ve gathered, the more I believe they likely do. But what? Not sure. It just seems rather odd to see so many shoes either at the intersection to alleys and mid-block within alleys. If they shoes were being thrown up on lines to as a funny hazing operation or to celebrate a milestone like graduations, I’d expect them to appear in more prominent locations.

What do you think? Know anyone who’s hung a pair of shoes? Done it yourself? Have a 4th hand story to pass along? Let’s hear it.
